What is the minimum configuration necessary for EFS Assistant to run?

The EFS Assistant Administrator's guide states the following:

"If the tool cannot find its configuration data, it logs an error and exits. The tool will not run if it cannot find its configuration in the registry."

  • What exactly does the EFS Assistant look for in the Registry to verify that "its configuration data" exists?
    • Does it merely detect the presence of one or more Keys (such as \EFS Assistant\)?
    • Or does it look for the presence of certain values as well (e.g. FolderEncryptionMode)?
  • If any of the Registry settings that are populated by the "Evaluation Settings" option in the installer are deleted or mangled after EFS Assistant is installed, does EFS Assistant stop working?
  • Does EFS Assistant look for any settings under HKCU, or just those under HKLM?

The tool will not run unless it sees "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\EFS Assistant\FolderEncryptionMode" set to a valid value (0, 1, or 2). If this registry setting is set, the tool will be able to run, even if other settings are not found. No registry settings are stored under HKCU.
